Walls Around Us

Why?

We have been building walls around us 
As if anybody who approached us 
Was here to arrest us, 
push us to the ground 
Put a handcuff on our arms around our backs 
such that 
we cannot even get up from there 
on our own 
without help from them 

And while now that is also happening 
It was not true until now 
At least for most of us
If not all of us 

So, why did we raise walls around us
In houses 
In countries 
In our minds 

Why raise walls around us at all
Why are we not keeping them open all the time 
Approachable 
Friendly 
Helpful 
Neighborly 
Yes us 

Where did courtesy 
Politeness 
Love for all go 

As if walls can really protect us 
From the enemy
If he comes for us 
And breaks our windows 
Our doors 
Our minds even 
If he chooses 

I’m taking about narcissistic persons here 
Who try to break us 
Rip us 
Throw us down everyday 

Not understanding 
That it is not us
But them
That has a problem 

And needs a solution 
A doctor
A friend to care for them
And hold their hands 

And instead 
We are raising up walls 
All around us 
As if they were going to protect us 

When the guys show up at our door
Banging 
Telling us it’s time
We let go
And release 
Who we are holding 
With us inside
In peace 

How unkind of them
And did those walls really do anything to stop them?
Just think about all that we lost 
By burning those bridges 

Without thinking 
Without trusting 
And understanding 

In anxiety
In fear 
In panic 

As if a monster 
Was coming to devour us 
When we were asleep in our bedrooms 

Sleeping peacefully 
Like a baby 
Without understanding
Did the walls help us ?
