Purchasing A Sectional: A Customer Experience
It’s not enough to be happy with what we come across at first. We also have to rule out other seemingly equally viable options in order to be a satisfied consumer!

We finally found a sectional today that we were happy to buy. These days the sectionals that are stacked in the show rooms are not very good. Not sure who came up with the idea. But most of them suck! There is not enough back support in any of them. Most of them just look like oversized stuffed pillows.
And we can’t just use them for hosting people visiting us at our homes. We should also be able to enjoy them for ourselves especially for using them to lean back comfortably while watching TV. In my home we usually don’t have many visitors. We usually use the sofas for watching TV exclusively.
My husband wanted to buy a sectional since we finally found a decent home we could call as our own. But we needed to buy a decent sectional since our old sofa was six years old and filled with marker and drawings with pens.
We had specifications. We needed to buy a sectional that was affordable and comfortable, had enough back support and also looked decent and not cheap looking and it had to stay looking good for at least the next 10 years.
We went looking for the sectionals in three furniture showrooms. At first we went to Living Spaces a few days ago. We were not satisfied. Then we went to Rooms To Go. We found two sectionals that were comfortable but we didn’t like the color of the one and the other seemed too rough for the skin though we were very happy with them comfort wise.
So we trudged back to Living Spaces again, this time meeting with another agent and she walked us through some of the sectionals which were overpriced but seemed comfortable.
Still, we were not fully satisfied. So, we decided to wait before we made up our minds. It didn’t seem like the prices was right for the sectionals of this type with backs that were just oversized pillows but didn’t have any firmness or support for the spine.
Then we decided to try Ashley’s since we’d had a good experience with Ashley’s with our last sofa, love seat and rocker combo some 21 years ago. But Ashley’s in NJ is probably different from Ashley’s in TX and so we were not happy with the sectionals we found here. Even the store seemed terribly old and worn out.
So then we went back to Living Spaces again and this time we met with an agent who seemed extremely friendly and helpful showing us a lot of sectionals and the different fabrics we could choose from for them.
While it was a good experience trying out all the sectionals again, it was also slightly confusing and by the end of it, we felt pushed to buy and we were not happy with the prices that seemed conveniently priced so we would choose the higher of the two options.
For example, a two seater was priced at $800 while a three seater of the same set of couches was priced at $825. We were very unhappy with this kind of pricing. It seemed very bogus and the agent also confused us about the pricing of one particular sectional that was seemed affordable and was on display. Overall, it was not a satisfactory experience.
So finally we went back to Rooms To Go again. The last sofa we had purchased from them about six years ago when we had moved to Texas is still pretty functional and we have no regrets having bought it. So, we went again this morning. Then went back to our new home to take measurements to make sure we were able to use it there without regret and then went back again and ordered the sectional!
Finally we are a happy customer! Thank you Rooms To Go. The agent was also very decent—he left us to ourselves, didn’t push us, gave us enough time and room to choose and make up our minds. we went thrice before we committed to the purchase! He was also happy in the end and wished us well in our new home. Thank you Sam!
