Why did the Night Heron come to me
I am floored again 
What is with the birds in the pond
Do they all know me now 

How I stop by to take pictures 
How I stop to simply stare
And what’s with all the pairs there 
They always fly in pairs 

I thought God was saying something to me
Turns out they were just enjoying their life 
Living the life they were given 
Living in glorious heaven on earth 
They were just living their life joyfully without regret 

Have I not yet learned from them?
I think I have
It was never about me at all
It was always only about them all

They live so close to my home 
One street and behind that set of houses  
Is the creek that’s almost like a parallel street 
And the Night Herons seem to live there 

They are always standing right there 
When I go walking 
And at the pond live the rest of the birds 
They have learned to co exist with man 

They don’t disturb us
Except for the bird calls 
They live their lives at best 
But we?

We don’t know to coexist 
We only want to be selfish 
We only live greedily 
And we believe 
That we are born to rule 
Rule over man and beast 

Ego can be a good thing 
Ego can give us our identity 
But Ego can also make us feel
Important 

Ego can take us places 
Ego can bring us glory 
Ego can bestow honor 
For exemplary living 

But Ego that we were born to rule 
Ego that everyone is below us
Ego that teaches to hoard all things
That’s Ego we can withhold 

We can learn from the birds and the beasts 
How the Blue Jay kept annoying the Hawk 
The Hawk could have silenced it 
But it simply moved out of its spot 

No Ego there
Just wisdom to coexist 
Perhaps it was perched  
near the Blue Jays nest 

There was no need for the Night Heron 
To fly by and visit me
But it did 
because it understood me

Even birds can understand an admiration 
And an admirer 
Enough to pay them a visit
And stay long enough 
for them to pay attention 
And pick up the language of love 
from within themselves

Why not man?

Let’s learn from the birds 
Let’s learn from the beasts 
How to let go of the Ego 
that prevents us from healthy living 

Now say cheese!
Let Ego take you places 
But don’t let Ego hold you back
from being who you were meant to be
Learn instead to live, love and coexist!
